SCEGGS Darlinghurst, located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, will start charging parents more than $42,000 a year to pay for extra counsellors after a reported spike in anxiety rates among students.

In an email sent to parents, principal Jenny Allum and the school’s chair Peter Hicks explained that the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the need for additional equipment, extra cleaning costs and staff pay increases.

The letter also read, “We also understand the added stress and anxiety levels being felt by many SCEGGS girls.

“The 2022 salary budget includes increased provisions for student services and counselling to assist SCEGGS girls navigate these difficult times, and more generally greater support for mental health initiatives.

“It also noted the board was cognisant of the need to keep fees low while allowing the school to attract and retain quality teaching and support staff.”
