An out of control fire is burning close to homes in Londonderry.

Firefighters are being assisted by waterbombing aircraft, including the Large Air Tanker. Heavy smoke is visible in the area.

The fire is burning in Very High fire danger conditions. Under these conditions, fires can be difficult to control.

People in the areas around Nutt Road, Londonderry Road, Boscobel Road, Spencer Road, Studley Street and Emily Street should put their Bush Fire Survival Plan into action. If you do not have a Bush Fire Survival Plan, know what you will do if the fire threatens your property.

There are 40 homes in the immediate area.

The RFS is urging residents to take action now.

Strong westerly winds may blow embers ahead of the fire and create spot fires. These may threaten homes earlier than the predicted main fire front.

UPDATE (2:10PM):

RFS has that the fire at Castlereagh is now downgraded to ADVICE level. However, there is still a large amount of smoke in the area.

More as we get it.
