Iconic Paralympian Marieke Vervoort has died by euthanasia.
The Belgian superstar was a trailblazer and a champion wheelchair sprinter – winning gold at the 2012 London Paralympics.
She lived with an incurable degenerative spinal condition and has been a staunch advocate for euthanasia over the years.
“There was no fear for death,” she had said.
“For me, it’s something peaceful. I don’t want to suffer when I’m dying.”
“We will not forget Marieke Vervoort’s great sporting achievements, as well as her courage in the face of illness,” President of the Belgian Paralympic Committee, Anne d’Ieteren said.
In 2008, Vervoort she signed the necessary euthanasia papers in 2008 as well as sign off from a panel of doctors.
“I hope everybody sees that this is not murder, but it makes people live longer.
“When it becomes too much for me to handle, then I have my life in my own hands.”
