Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech is due to undergo heart surgery in Thailand after suffering a severe infection.
As a result, 9 News is reporting that Fenech will have to miss his daughter’s wedding as he is unable to fly home in time.
Fenech’s long-time friend Dominic Jarvis spoke about his condition to 9 News.
“It’s shell-shocking news for everybody. He’s just in a lot of pain and dealing with a lot of emotions at the moment, every ten minutes something else transpires,” said Jarvis.
“He is in a lot of pain. I’ve never seen him like this. He hans’t slept for at least six days. He can’t sleep and when he does go to nod off, he struggles to breath, so he’s too scared to sleep.”
The 55-year-old, who is now a boxing trainer, flew to Thailand for a training camp last week when he was rushed to hospital on Friday after coughing up blood.
According to 9 News, the infection has blocked a valve to his heart, which has caused bleeding to the lungs.
The three time world title holder will undergo surgery to replace the valve with a new tissue valve and due to recovery time it’s believed that he won’t make it back to Australia in time for his eldest daughter Jessica’s wedding, which is due to take place in less than two weeks.
His wife Suzee has reportedly flown to Thailand to be with her husband, who is receiving around the clock care in the ICU.
