Resident’s in Sydney’s west will now be fined $450 if they are caught littering their face masks.

“Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic we are seeing face masks littered on footpaths, in car parks and even in shopping trolleys,” Blacktown City Council said.

“Littering is illegal and a $450 aggravated littering fine will be issued to anyone caught littering a face mask.”

It’s also important to note that discarded face masks could contain traces of COVID-19 and further spread the virus, posing a threat to the community.

Disposable masks also pose a risk to wildlife as they “cause enormous plastic waste”.

Since January 3rd, face masks are mandatory on public transport and indoor facilities including shops, entertainment facilities, places of worship, beauty businesses and aged care facilities.

However, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has promised to ease COVID-19 restrictions in a week’s time, if all goes well, after the community heeded her call to drive up testing numbers.
