A Tamil asylum-seeker family from Biloela that has been on Christmas Island for two years will be reunited on the Australian mainland.

Facing pressure from community groups, lawyers, doctors, opposition parties and coalition backbenchers, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has confirmed the family will be allowed to settle in Perth.

While the family will be allowed to resettle in Perth through a community detention placement, the decision will not create a pathway visa.
