Aussies are being targeted in a phone scam that costs them a motza as soon as they return a call.

It works by a scammer calling you and hanging up before you can answer, leaving you a missed call.

Then when you call the premium international number back, they try to keep you on the line for as long as possible to squeeze as much cash as they can out of you.

“Had a call from an unfamiliar international number? Don’t answer or ring back — it could be a scam that’ll cost you a small fortune,” Scamwatch warned on Facebook.

“If you’ve returned one of these calls and receive a large bill, contact your telecommunications provider to discuss your options,” the Scamwatch website says.
