New research has revealed which Sydney suburbs are most at risk of coronavirus-related job losses.
The figures have been revealed as the state’s records a predictable uptick in the jobless figure, with NSW’s unemployment rate rising to 6 per cent.
Australia’s unemployment rate jumped to a seasonally-adjusted 6.2 per cent in April following coronavirus-related lockdowns but the spike was lower than economists had expected.
The Centre of Full Employment and Equity has developed the Employment Vulnerability Index as a way to identify which suburbs have a higher proportion of jobs that are thought to be ‘at risk’ during an economic downturn.
Those in low skilled jobs and people employed in casual and part-time positions are said to be at most risk.
According to the figures, 16 Sydney communities are considered ‘high risk’ with Bidwill/Hebersham/Emerton leading the charge.
