Sydney’s $3 billion motorway NorthConnex will be open to drivers next week.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the mega-project in Sydney’s north was a game-changer for drivers and would open on October 31.
Drivers would be able to avoid 21 sets of traffic lights on Pennant Hills road, saving as much as 15 minutes in travel time, she said on Thursday.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance said NorthConnex would remove 5000 trucks a day from Pennant Hills Road, one of the most congested roads in NSW.
NorthConnex featured the latest in tunnel technology, including 24/7 monitoring, he said.
“NorthConnex will be the first road tunnel in Australia to include innovative lighting features, including trees, starscapes and birds, aimed at keeping drivers engaged. Testing is being conducted on systems we’ve never seen in any other tunnel in Australia.”
