Three decades after the world’s worst nuclear disaster, Chernobyl has emerged as a tourism hotspot.

Since the recent airing of the hit HBO series Chernobyl, which was rated higher than both Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, interest in the location has skyrocketed.

Chernobyl is one of the most polluted places in the world and has been an tourist destination since 2011, with tours taking visitors around the power plant and the nearby abandoned town of Pripyat.

Thing is, while it’s normal for tourists to post about their travels on social media, some influencers seems to be using the site as an ‘aesthetic’.

The surge in such obnoxious online posts has prompted the creator of the series to tweet this reminder:

“If you visit, please remember that a terrible tragedy occurred there. Comport yourselves with respect for all who suffered and sacrificed.”

The deadly Chernobyl accident on April 26, 1986, occurred after a routine test at one of the power plant’s reactors went catastrophically wrong.

To this day, the clean-up operation is still in progress.
