The cheapest and most expensive capital cities in Australia to hold a funeral have been revealed by comparison website Finder.
This was determined by comparing the burial/cremation ceremony costs from major funeral providers in each capital city, excluding Darwin.
The most expensive city to hold a funeral was found to be Perth, with an average cost of $8,261. This was followed by Hobart ($7,588) and Melbourne ($7,581). The cheapest city was Brisbane, with an average cost of $6,728.

“Private funerals typically cost somewhere in the region of $4,000 for a basic cremation up to $15,000 for a more elaborate burial,” Finder’s Nicola Middlemiss explained.
“Luckily, there are plenty of ways to reduce costs while still having a respectful send-off,” she added.
These include avoiding peak times, holding a weekday service (weekend services can be more expensive), choosing cremation (burials are more expensive than cremations), reducing extras (keeping funeral cars/newspaper notices to a minimum), comparing providers and getting quotes from various funeral providers.
