South Australia’s Monarto Safari Park is celebrating today as it welcomes to the world a newborn rhino calf!
The calf is a Southern White Rhino, a species that is threatened with extinction.
The girl spent the night with her mum, with keepers getting their first chance to see her yesterday morning.
Monarto Safari Park’s Director Peter Clark says that they newborn calf is an important arrival for the species.
“A little Southern White Rhinoceros is a big reason for celebration,” Clark says.
“Nearly ten thousand animals have been lost to poaching in the wild in just the last 10 years.”
Zookeepers are already smitten with the new arrival, with Senior Ungulate Keeper Mark Mills gushing about the goofy-looking calf.
“The young rhino is absolutely gorgeous and, like all little rhinos, looks like she has a lot of growing to do to catch up with her large ears and feet!”
The Monarto Safari Park reopened to the public at the end of June, you can now book tickets online to visit again.
