Let’s be honest, after a late night out or a busy week, the one thing most of us look forward to in the morning is a hot cup of brew! Although we could be deemed as coffees biggest fans, we had no idea about some of the effects it has on us… or on the economy for that matter!
Coffee Fact 1:
Coffee can make you smarter. It’s true! Big statement we know, but after getting our little heads around a very confusing scientific article we surmised that coffee blocks adenosine (a chemical that makes us drowsy) and provides a stimulant affect, that results in a quicker reaction time, enhanced memory, vigilance and rational thinking, so in short making us smarter!
Coffee Fact 2:
Not only can it make us smarter… research has found that people who drink a moderate amount of coffee (moderate = 2 cups a day) are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or dementia in old age.
Coffee Fact 3:
It also seems we might just be throwing all of our expensive wrinkle creams in the bin. The Japanese, well known the world over for the flawless complexions, bathe in coffee grounds to improve their skin and reduce wrinkles… but before you head to your nearest Gloria Jeans Coffees to beg for their remnant coffee grounds read these tips on how to rid yourself of wrinkles and the dreaded C word, cellulite!
Coffee Fact 4:
If you don’t already know what antioxidants are, pay attention. These are cells that can mop up the “free radical molecules” in our body. These “free radicals” can damage our cells, which can be linked to certain diseases and cancers. Antioxidants can be found in fruits and vegetables; however coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the modern diet! Good to know.
Coffee Fact 5:
The extensive list of stimulants banned by the Olympics committee includes coffee! Apparently athletes who test positive for more than 12 micrograms of caffeine per millilitre of urine may be banned from the Olympics games. Luckily we’re not athletes… we rely on this extra speed it gives us!
Coffee Fact 6:
One fact we’re particularly fond of is that it once was a custom in Turkey for a husband to promise he would provide his wife with coffee. And if he did not, it was grounds for divorce!
Coffee Fact 7:
Now something that isn’t surprising is that the two most popular beverages in the world are water and coffee, and that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world (oil being the first).
Coffee Fact 8:
Last but by far means least, Kopi Luwack, the world’s most unique and expensive type of coffee (up to $600 per kilo) is excreted by a wild civet cat! Apparently it improves the taste through selection and digestion… we’ll stick to our usual cup from Gloria Jeans Coffees, ahem.
