The Age is reporting that European trade officials are putting up a fight as to whether Australian producers can continue using household food names such as Prosecco and feta.

Sources have confirmed to the newspaper that the government have managed to push back a European Union proposal that means producers down under would have to call the products feta-like”, “parmesan-like” or “prosecco-like” to meet demands from Greece and Italy in a new trade deal.

A compromise that could happen is the products being labelled as ‘Australian Prosecco’, with Trade Minister Simon Birmingham flying into Brussels to negotiate.

If the branding change is not accepted that it means we could also see Moscato changing.

The deal is expected to be finalised in 2021.
