While dogs are indeed, man’s best friend, it’s fair to say that when it comes to the various breeds of pooch’s some are more popular than others with us humans.

When it comes to one particular breed, you probably won’t be surprised to find out that out of the almost five million dogs in Australia, the most popular is the family friendly Labrador Retriever.

But Dogs NSW, now say that labs might not be top dog for much longer.

According to registration figures for Dogs NSW, and the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC), smaller canines like the French Bulldog and Miniature Schnauzer are close behind in the popularity stakes.

President of Dogs NSW Lyn Brown said:

“We are now seeing an increase in popularity of smaller breeds, such as French Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Miniature Schnauzers, because they are charming and more suitable for apartment living”

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has held on to the No.2 spot for many years, while ANKC breeders are concerned that the ‘fads’ of certain celebrity breeds may cause issues.

“Fashion, celebrity and social media-fueled pet breed fads are attracting ‘greeders’ who breed for profit, ending up with dogs with health problems or behavioural issues.

“Our pets are not the latest fad – they are a long-term commitment. We encourage the pet industry and prospective dog owners to join the movement to keep healthy puppies in homes, where they belong,” Mrs Brown said.
