It’s not very often you come across a TV show that has an opening sequence as engaging as Orange is the New Black’s (OITNB). For anyone that has sat through a marathon of OITNB will know that the skip or fast forward option is not usually used.

It may be the catchy theme song (Regina Spektor’s “You’ve Got Time) or the montage of smiles, frowns, glares and stares of female prisoners.

Either way, mentalfloss has reported that one of the show’s writers, Jenji Kohan – Hired non-actresses to pose for the spot. All of them were once incarcerated women who were asked to visualise various things in order to get the right expression.

The women were asked to think about three things: “a peaceful place,” “a person who makes you laugh,” and finally, “something that you want to forget.”
