While the Billboard Music Awards celebrate what’s happening now on the charts, this year, the show is also planning to look back at a major pop culture moment: the 30th anniversary of a chart-topping single from the classic John Hughes film The Breakfast Club.
Simple Minds will appear on the May 17 telecast to perform their hit song from The Breakfast Club, “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” to mark the 30th anniversary of the song topping the Billboard Hot 100: it hit #1 the week of May 18, 1985. The movie itself was released in February of that same year.
Even more exciting, the band will be introduced on stage by Breakfast Club star Molly Ringwald. But hey…is it too much to ask for Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall to join her?
This will be the second year in a row that an ’80s band that was a staple of MTV’s early years has taken the stage at the BBMAs. Last year, a-Ha showed up to join Pitbull for “Feel This Moment,” based on their hit “Take On Me.”
Simple Minds will join previously announced musical performers Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Hozier, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Meghan Trainor, John Legend and many more on the telecast.
