It’s no surprise the legendary Bob Dylan takes the number one spot on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Songwriters, followed by The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and John Lennon at numbers two and three respectively. Rock-and-roll pioneer Chuck Berry and Motown icon Smokey Robinson round out the top five.
You’ll find Madonna and Taylor Swift are counted among some of the greatest songwriters of all time too. The Queen of Pop ranks number 56, while Taylor the youngest artist on the list -comes in at number 97.
“She might be the youngest artist on this list,” Rolling Stone writes about Taylor. “But she’s already written two or three careers’ worth of keepers.”
Of Madonna, the mag writes, “Through it all, her songs have been consistently stamped with her own sensibility and inflected with autobiographical detail.”
