The season four premiere of Riverdale is going to be one emotional ride and we’ve just received our first taste of it.
While the next season is still over a month away, Showrunner for the series, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa posted a photo to Twitter showing an emotional moment from the premiere episode, which we know if going to be a tribute to the late Luke Perry.
Perry played Fred Andrews in the series but he sadly died from a serious stroke earlier in March this year.
In the image, actor KJ Apa, who plays Fred’s son Archie, is seen hugging actress Molly Ringwood, who plays his mother and Fred’s ex-wife Mary.
While Archie’s back is to the camera, Mary looks as though she’s crying as she embraces her son.
“No words,” wrote Roberto in the caption along with a love heart and the hashtag “#Riverdale”.

The premiere episode of season four is due to address Luke Perry’s death onscreen with the help of his close friend and Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Shannen Doherty.
Judging by the image, we assume that the characters are likely mourning the death of Fred, although at this point we are unsure what may have caused his death on the show.
All we do know is that it’s going to be incredibly emotional.
“I think it’s a real tribute to Luke. I think it’s a real tribute to Fred. I think it’s very cathartic to watch it and I think everyone really came together, specifically to tell this kind of story, to honour Luke and honour Fred…It’s a really simple—it’s one of our…just beautiful,” Aguirre-Sacasa said at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour.
When Luke Perry passed away, Riverdale had already written the end of season three and so they decided that the best way to honour him would be to “take a beat” and pay tribute at the beginning of season four to make sure they got it right.
“Rather than try to squeeze something in and potentially not get it right, we thought, ‘Let’s take a beat and let’s figure out really what would be the best way to honour Luke and to Honour the character of Fred, and let’s do it at the top of season four’,” Aguirre-Sacasa said to ET back in May.
As for the introduction of Perry’s friend Shannen Doherty in season four, the Showrunner said that they wanted to include someone special from Perry’s real life to help honour him.
“Luke and Shannen were really, really good friends,” Aguirre-Sacasa told ET. “Luke had talked to me on and off over the years about trying to find something for Shannen on the show and when we were putting together this special episode, we kind of wanted to include special people from Luke’s life.”
“There was a very emotional, important role and we sent the script to Shannen and she read it and loved it and said, ‘I want to do it,’ so it’s about honouring their friendship a little bit,” he continued. “I know she was really moved when she read the script and immediately said yes.”
Season four of Riverdale is set to premiere early in October.
