Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins has recalled the band’s worst-ever show, a night that began with playing a practical joke on the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Speaking to Radio X, Hawkins recounted that, just a few days earlier, RHCP drummer Chad Smith arranged for thousands of M&Ms and popcorn to be dropped on Taylor’s drum kit while he played.
So, of course, the Foos’ retaliated – the moment was caught on a Chili Peppers’ concert movie (check it out up top).
“First of all, we dropped a thousand golf balls on their heads, and then pasta,” Hawkins said.
“They were good sports about it.”
Smith had his own memory of the incident.
“Down comes ping pong balls and glitter, which was kinda weird – it was okay, but kinda weird,” he recalled in 2017.
“Dave (Grohl) and Taylor are at the side, and (I’m, like,) ‘F**k you!’”
Smith continued by saying that frontman Anthony Kiedis was laughing and missing all the words.
“Then the ping pong balls and the glitter stopped. I was like, ‘Okay, cool’,” he said.
“Then like 500 pounds of spaghetti! That was like snakes falling on you for a long time. It did not stop, it was all over the drums… they got me really good.
“I barely finished the end of the song, then I run off and tackle Dave.”
That same night, however, wasn’t all fun and games for the Foo Fighters.
Hawkins admitted how an earlier heavy drinking session led to their disastrous gig.
“We got so friction’ hammered before we went onstage, we just couldn’t even play,” Hawkins admitted.
“I think that we literally played, like, three songs and then just laid on the stage.
“People were kinda like booing us – it was really a low point.”
Both Smith and Hawkins remain close mates.
“Taylor’s godfather to one of my kids,” Smith previously said.
