Jimi Hendrix fans will want to mark September 4 on their calendars. That evening will see the world premiere of a new documentary, Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, on Showtime in America.
Directed by John McDermott, the film captures the guitar legend’s performance at the Atlanta Pop Music Festival in July of 1970 just two months before his death. During the performance which was his largest ever in the U.S. Hendrix blazes through such classics as “Purple Haze,” “Freedom,” “Hey Joe” and his version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the latter against a backdrop of fireworks. The documentary includes never before seen footage, plus interviews with Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood and Hendrix’s late drummer Mitch Mitchell.
