Moulin Rouge is iconic as… the Titanic.
I feel like almost everyone, except a handful of people, have watched it!
Australian director Baz Luhrmann rose to fame with this film which he wrote and directed and has no revealed that the lead was almost a very familiar Australian face.
Apparently, the male lead was almost given to Heath Ledger but Ewan McGregor ended up with the role.
“A young Heath Ledger was up for the role and I thought maybe the character could be very young…’And it turned out they (Heath and Nicole) did really work together. And it was quite beautiful,” the director told news.com.au
“But Heath was just too young in the end.”
With Nicole being 33 and Ledger only 21 at the time, the story would have felt very different with such an age gap however, McGregor was 30 at the time and Baz felt he was the ‘perfect partner’ for Nicole in the film.
