Jon Bon Jovi has made a video honouring New Jersey high school football player Evan Murray, who died after getting injured on the field last Friday.

“I heard word about Evan, and as a father of football players, my heart, my prayers and my thoughts go out to the Murray family,” Jon says in the YouTube video posted Thursday — the day of Evan’s funeral.

He continues, “You are in my prayers. To all the team, I wish you the best this season and keep it up guys, all right? Win one for Evan.”

On Thursday night, the musician displayed Evan’s jersey number 18 on his guitar during his concert in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The band also dedicated “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?” to the 17-year-old, according to Billboard.

Evan reportedly died from massive internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen. He was injured during the Warren Hills Regional High School game against Summit High School. The quarterback was able to walk off the field, but later died at the hospital.

Jon, a New Jersey native and father of four, is a devoted football fan. His son, Jesse Bongiovi, played for Notre Dame’s football team in 2013.
