On Sunday night, it was confirmed that channel 9 entertainment reporter, Richard Wilkins, had tested positive to the coronavirus after Tom Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson visited the Channel 9 studios last week.
Nine News Australia confirmed the news, writing in a tweet that “a much-loved member of the 9News team, Nine Entertainment Editor and Weekend Today Host Richard Wilkins has tested positive to coronavirus”.
His son, Christian Wilkins, had just wrapped up filming for Dancing With The Stars when he received the news.
The show’s producers immediately released the following statement after the news broke: “Christian Wilkins was not aware of his father’s positive diagnoses of the coronavirus until after tonight’s Dancing with the Stars episode.
“Although Christian does not believe he has been exposed, he along with this dance partner Lily Cornish have self-isolated and will be testing first thing in the morning.
“A number of precautions had already been put in place for Sunday’s show to minimise any potential exposure or spread of the virus, including promoting good hygiene practices backstage and in studio and filming without a studio audience.”
The 24-year-old shared his own experience on Jonesy & Amanda this morning, reiterating his “absolute shock” at hearing the news.
“He [Richard] only got tested as a precaution so it’s really scary.”
The 24-year-old is currently in self-isolation with his dance partner Lily Cornish in their hotel where they have been spending their time practicing this Sunday’s Dancing With The Stars routines and perfecting the “Quarantini” cocktail, which Wilkins says closely resembles a vodka soda. However, he is remaining hopeful.
“They said it takes between three to five days [to get the results] because there’s so many people going to get results but there’s no definitive answer”.
