Moviegoers checked into Hotel Transylvania 2 this weekend, helping the Adam Sandler movie break several box office records and take the number one spot. The animated film, of course, is a sequel to the 2012 children’s flick, and features the voices of Sandler and Selena Gomez.
When the original came out three years ago, it set the record for the biggest September box office opening ever. Now the second movie has topped that, breaking its own record with $47.5 million in tickets sales.
Sandler’s win, however, was Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro’s loss. Their new movie, The Intern, came in a very distant second place with $18.2 million. Last week’s chart-topper, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, fell to third with $14 million. Everest secured fourth place with $13.1 million in box office receipts, while Black Mass nabbed fifth with $11.5 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were The Visit in sixth place with $6.7 million, and the romantic thriller The Perfect Guy in seventh with $4.8 million. War Room came in eight with $4.3 million, and The Green Inferno took ninth place with $3.5 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was Sicario, which earned $1.8 million.
