We heard  Elton John’s life is going to become a movie titled Rocketman, with actor Tom Hardy starring as Elton.  But now, it appears the life of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will also become a musical.

Theatre producer Sally Greene tells British paper The Sun that a musical based on Elton John’s life is “in the works right now,” adding, “It will be called Rocketman, but we will do the film first. It’ll open on Broadway before London.”

She added, “It will be Elton’s back catalogue…he will never end his career.”

So-called “jukebox musicals,” built around hits by rock and pop stars or based on their lives, have been successful over the years.  Examples include Movin’ Out, based on the music of Billy Joel; Mamma Mia!, based on the music of ABBA; Beautiful, based on the life of Carole King; and Jersey Boys, based on the career of The Four Seasons.  A new one called On Your Feet!, based on the life of Gloria Estefan, is opening this year.

Elton knows a thing or two about hit musicals, of course: he’s been nominated for Tony Awards for his work on The Lion King and Billy Elliott, and won one for Aida.
