A unique mosaic of US movie star Clint Eastwood made from thousands of bullet cases has been created to mark his 85th birthday.

The portrait, created by British artist Ed Chapman, contains almost 10,000 used cartridges and features the actor and director in his iconic role of the 1971 film Dirty Harry.

It has been valued at STG10,000 ($A20,000) and has already attracted a buyer.

Four years ago Chapman created a portrait of Jimi Hendrix which sold at a charity auction for a mosaic world record of STG23,000.

“I have always been a fan of Clint Eastwood and Dirty Harry is probably my favourite film of his among so many great movies,” Mr Chapman said.

“I had to go into a sort of trance to keep focused on his portrait and I am delighted with the results.”
