If you don’t win MasterChef, it doesn’t mean you’re done in the cooking world.

That’s what young gun Ava Stangherlin has taught us, as after being knocked off the rankings, she picked up the phone, rang a top Sydney restaurant – literally as she was being driven home from the competition – and asked for a job.

And it worked – the 23-year-old is now working with celeb chef Justin North at Woollahra’s Hotel Centennial. 

“I had my giant suitcase in the back and I thought ‘what the hell’ so I called them on the way home and asked if I could come in for a trial,” Stangherlin told News Corp Australia. “A day later I was in chef’s whites and now I’ve got a job with them full-time.”

Stangherlin, who was booted off MasterChef after an underwhelming duck dish, now commands the kitchen six nights a week at the exclusive eatery, and is responsible for the restaurant’s entree orders. 

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned from MasterChef it’s that you need to be brave and have confidence in yourself, to believe you can do it,” she said.

What a go-getter!
