Sir Elton John has opened up about his relationship with Michael Jackson in his new memoir, ‘Me’.
While the 72-year-old performer details his experiences with a multitude of celebrities over his illustrious career, it’s his stories about the late Michael Jackson that have attracted headlines.
According to the internationally-renowned performer, he first met Michael when he was around 14 or 16.
“I’d known Michael since he was 13 or 14… He was just the most adorable kid you could imagine,” he recalls.
“But at some point in the intervening years, he started sequestering himself away from the world, and away from reality the way Elvis Presley did.”
He adds, “God knows what was going on in his head, and God knows what prescription drugs he was being pumped full of, but every time I saw him in his later years I came away thinking the poor guy had totally lost his marbles.
“I don’t mean that in the light-hearted way. He was genuinely mentally ill, a disturbing person to be around.
“It was incredibly sad.”
He then went on to add that Michael “couldn’t seem to cope with adult company at all,” which could explain his connection and friendship with children.
However, fans of Michael Jackson are not impressed with Elton John’s judgement, deeming him a “hypocrite”.

This is just a short picture thread of a "mentally I'll disturbing to be around" Michael Jackson who according to Elton John in 1993 stated he didn't sit down for dinner in ten years with adults because he felt uncomfortable pic.twitter.com/TDhrr0wQMi

Elton John, don't talk about a person's life when that person lived a life that you could never understand.
You speak of Michael Jackson as if you really knew him or had experienced a lot of valuable time with him. How dare you?? 😠

If what Elton John said is true, then I can't believe this man had the audacity to call Michael "weird". pic.twitter.com/C961ErZyLw

Elton John has already been accused of sensationalisation in his memoir by his younger half-brother, Geoff. Elton reportedly claims in his book that their father, Stanley Dwight, failed to support his career choice, and never showed him any affection.
However, Geoff has slammed these claims, stating that his famous half-brother only chose to “believe what he wants to believe” and must have suffered “massive memory loss”.
