Celebrity mementos are big business, with stars often donating their old clothes and accessories to charity auctions. But whilst we can see the appeal of owning J.Lo’s old shoes or Beyonce’s tour necklace, there are some fans out there who will bid for the likes of fingernails, old tissues, and in Kanye West’s case, even air. Earlier this week, one thrifty eBay user decided to auction off some air from the 37-year-old rapper’s concert, with more than 90 bidders bringing the price up to $65,000 before the post was removed from the site. Several sellers have now had the same idea, with numerous bags of ‘Kanye air’ and even a ‘Kanye fart’ popping up on the site. But this is by far one of the tamer pieces of celebrity memorabilia to be auctioned off.
Check out nine of the weirdest and practically inexplicable fan purchases below.
John Lennon’s Tooth:
Apparently, John Lennon gave his housekeeper his tooth and asked her to give it to her daughter as a souvenir of The Beatles. That same tooth was sold at auction for $31,200 to a Canadian Dentist. Talk about a niche market
Katy Perry’s Trampoline:
One of K-Pez’s crazy stage props found a good home back in 2011, and the profits went to a charitable cause too. The cupcake trampoline from her ‘California Gurls’ video reached $5,000 in a large celebrity auction, with the proceeds going to benefit earthquake and tsunami relief charities in Japan.
James Blunt’s sister:
Normally we wouldn’t suggest auctioning off your family, but James had a very good reason for advertising his sister on eBay. After finding out his sis had no way of attending a funeral in Ireland he took to the bidding site to appeal for help. He wrote, “Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armour! Desperate to get to a funeral in southern Ireland, please help!” The unusual ploy worked and the winning bidder flew James’ sister to Ireland in his private helicopter. In true fairytale style the two fell in love – the incident took place in 2004 and to this day they are still loved-up and happily married.
Britney Spears’ gum:
Britney’s fans seemed to have a bit of a fetish for her old bits of chewing gum, with many of her already chewed treats selling for between $5-10. However, one seller managed to cheat the system, padding out his own bids so that the overall winner paid more than $14,000 for a bit of dried up old Hubba Bubba. Amazingly, the seller didn’t even have any proof that gum was in fact in Britney’s, which means the buyer could have bought anyone’s old gum. That was back in 2004, but we reckon he’s still kicking himself about it now.
The lamp that nearly burnt down Ozzy Osbourne’s house:
A light may seem like a far more useful purchase than some of the other items on this list, but it’s the story behind the sale that makes it unusual. Back in 2006, there was a small fire at Ozzy’s home, which was believed to have been caused by a bronze lamp in the form of a nude woman. Instead of throwing away the potentially dangerous item, the Osbourne’s decided they would sell it off, and a year later it fetched $2,500 at auction.
Scarlett Johansson’s tissue:
As stunning as Scar-Jo is, no one can make a cold sexy. At least we thought, until some crazed fans bid for one of her used tissues. Appearing on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in 2008, the actress blew her nose before placing the tissue in a signed bag and putting it up for a charity auction. The snotty hanky sold for a whopping $5,300, with the profits going to USA Harvest. Scarlett had joked that the tissue had “value,” since she said she caught her cold from Samuel L. Jackson.
Justin Timberlake’s French toast:
J.T wasn’t even at the height of his fame when he developed the ability to turn fans crazy. Back in 2000, after failing to finish his breakfast of French toast, Justin agreed that a DJ at New York radio station Z-100 could auction off the leftovers. An N-Sync fanatic, who happened to be a teenager, made the winning bid of $3,154, before telling the host, ”I’ll probably freeze-dry it, then seal it … then put it on my dresser.”
Before the days of ‘Kanye show air’ there was ‘Brangelina breath’ with one keen celeb spotter able to get close enough to Brand and Angie in 2011 to collect their air particles in a jar. In an eBay post he enticed bidders, writing, “Be the first to win this jar of Celebrity air, which may contain air molecules that came in direct contact with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.” Amazingly, it worked, and someone forked out $523 for a jar that had been somewhere near the famous couple.
Harry Styles’ vomit:
Normally the sight of someone throwing up in the street is met with concern or disdain. Not for Harry, however, who found his vomit patch had been turned into a shrine. After a “long hike” made the star empty his stomach on the side of a busy freeway in Los Angeles, fans erected a sign stating, “Harry Styles threw up here 10-12-14.” In an even weirder move, jars of vomit began popping up on eBay with the sellers claiming they had scooped it up from Hazza’s sick spot.
