  • Best and Worst Covers: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds

Share |

When looking at some of the best and worst covers in music history - it is hard to go past "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" - originally by The Beatles.

The song was primarily written by John Lennon and is credited Lennon-McCartney for 1967 concept album Sgt. pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The story is that john's son Julian with a nursery school drawing he called "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds".  It is not - as is often claimed - an acronym for LSD.

Elton John's Version

In 1974, Elton John released a cover version as a single. It featured background vocals and guitar by John Lennon under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie (Winston being Lennon's middle name).

William Shatner's Version

William Shatner produced his own version in 1968 on his debut album - The Transformed Album. Shatner was still starring in Star Trek at the time.

The Hooter's Version

Remember the Hooters?? The did the two hits "And We Danced" and "All You Zombies" . In 1987 they did their own version of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.  Right in the middle of the big mullet, fluffy hair and top done buttons on collared shirts.
