A six-year-old girl has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after witnesses say she was crushed between two cars.

Just after 12:40 this afternoon emergency services were called to Progress Avenue following reports of a car accident.

Witnesses say a blue Subaru was attempting to reverse from a parking spot when it hit two parked cars. The little girl was attempting to cross between the parked vehicles when the car struck.

The Subaru's female driver has been taken into custody and it's alleged she recorded a blood alcohol reading five times over the legal limit.  Police say she is helping them with their enquiries.
