Victoria Police Admit Delayed Arrest In Bourke Street Attack

Victoria Police has admitted an elite unit twice refused to arrest the man accused of the Bourke Street attack, hours before the disaster, despite grave warnings he was likely armed and a serious threat to public safety.

About nine hours before six pedestrians were killed and dozens more were mown down in January 2017, the Critical Incident Response Team denied specialist officers' requests to intercept Dimitrious Gargasoulas after he was identified as a suspect in a machete attack, The Age newspaper reports on Tuesday.

Senior police have told Fairfax, officers were unwilling to take risks after the introduction of the "zero harm" car pursuit policy in 2015 and varoius changes since.
