Trendy Sydney Pub Set To Shun The Melbourne Cup
It's the race that stops the nation, but for one Sydney pub this Melbourne Cup they'll be protesting Australia's biggest sporting event instead.
The Newton Hotel in the city's inner west instead plan to host an event called 'F**k the Cup'.
The event, will be a strictly 'no black tie' occasion, promising patrons it won't feature 'fancy lunch for suits to bet on some horses because it's name is cute'.
Guests at the hotel will also be able to pay what they want for a beer courtesy of a keg from a local brewery, with all proceeds going towards rehabilitating retired racehorses.
However, Liberal MLC Peter Phelps told The Daily Telegraph he thinks the event is 'petty' and appealed to 'woke animal liberationists who love that sort of thing'.
He said: 'The vast majority of Australians are going to be watching the cup - if people want to be grumble bums, they can be grumble bums'.
Hotel organisers told Daily Mail Australia the event isn't a protest stunt and they did not want to align it to any political inclinations.
A spokesman for the hotel said: 'There are many organisations that will be protesting on the day however we won't be directly aligning with them.
