The Fanning Family Announcement That Broke Their Hearts

The Fanning family have had their fair share of trouble this past year.

First there was the near death of pro surfer Mick Fanning, after he was attacked by a shark in South African waters earlier this year.

Now, Mick has received the devastating news that his eldest brother Peter had died in his sleep.

He received the news earlier this morning, just before he was heading into a heat, but paddled out with a heavy heart, knowing he needed a win to keep his title hopes alive.

Peter reportedly died in his sleep overnight and SURFER Magazine revealed the tragic announcement this morning via Twitter.

Fanning lost another brother, Sean, in a car accident in 1998 after he and another young surfer, Joel Green, were on their way home from a party when they were teenagers.

Fanning’s surf this morning ended up being the highest score of the heat as he progressed to round four of the final stop on the World Surf League tour, 12.14 to 2.70.

“It was always going to be a difficult heat. Jamie (O’Brien) is probably the best guy out here and surfs it the most,” Fanning said. “So I knew it was always going to be tough but in a heat anything can happen, I just got lucky at the start when Kelly (Slater) and Michel (Bourez) let me go that first one and from there I just kept trying to improve that back up score and just go from there.”
