Tennis Star Ana Ivanovic's Shock Announcement

Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic has shocked fans announcing her retirement from tennis via Facebook.

The 29-year-old posted a cryptic message on Instagram just days earlier, telling fans she had something important to tell them. Many speculated Ivanovic, who recently married German football star Bastian Schweinsteiger, might be pregnant. While others predicted she'd hang up the racquet.

In a Facebook live video, Ivanovic told fans that due to injuries she felt she could no longer play at the elite level she demands of herself.

“I’ve decided to retire from professional tennis,” she said.

“This has been a difficult decision but there has been so much to celebrate. By the time I had I was ranked No. 1 in the world in 2008 I had seen highs I never dreamt of. I won 15 WTA titles and played three grand slam finals,"

“But seeing those highs demands top physical form and it’s well-known that I have been hampered by injuries and I can only play on if I can perform to my own high standards and I can no longer do that, so it is time to move on.”

Plagued by injury Ivanovic has had a tough 2016. The fan favourite was knocked out in the first rounds of the US Open and Wimbledon and dropped to a world ranking of 63.

Despite the drop in form, the news has come as a shock to many tennis fans. Ivanovic was supposed to be making the trip to Aukland for the ASB Classic but pulled out this week.
