Sydney Airport Free Pick-Up Spot Moves
The free car pick-up spot at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal is set to be moved further away but people will get an extra five minutes' waiting time as part of a plan to reduce congestion.
Parking spots available for the new free pick-up zone near the P3 undercover car park will also be increased to 700 spaces from July 19.
The current free pick-up area at the terminal will now attract a fee of $4 for 15 minutes, payable via E-tag. Ride-sharing drivers using UberX or GoCar will also be able to use both pick-up areas.
"The new, under cover passenger pick-up area at T2/T3 offers 50 per cent more free parking time and significantly more car spaces, making it even easier to pick up friends and relatives at the airport," the airport's general manager parking and ground transport Craig Norton said in a statement on Monday.
He said the new arrangements were being put in place to ease parking congestion at the airport and cater for the increasing number of passengers using ride-sharing services.
The airport will also introduce one-hour free parking at its Blu Emu Car Park, which can be accessed via a free shuttle bus.
The NSW Taxi Council has welcomed the airport's plan and called on Uber to abandon its "unilateral direction to drivers" to use the free public pick-up area.
"It is vital for equity and fairness that everyone complies with the same rules. No one should be seeking to obtain an unfair advantage from this plan," a statement from the taxi body said on Monday.
