Scaffolding Collapse Kills Worker In North Ryde
A man is dead and another critically injured after scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in North Sydney.
A large crew of emergency services are on the scene in Macquarie Park with drivers being warned to avoid the area.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on Epping Road at around 12.20pm where a delicate rescue operation commenced to reach two workers trapped under concrete and scaffolding.
A 39-year-old man was freed and taken to Royal North Shore in a critical but stable condition with pelvic and abdominal injuries.
The rescue operation continued until crews became close enough to the other trapped man to confirm he had died at the scene.
The site remains a crime scene and the incident will be investigated by SafeWork NSW.
In the hours after emergency services were called, a spokesman for Ganellen, the construction company where the incident occurred said one of the workers had died.
"This is a tragic incident and our deepest sympathies go to the young man's family, co-workers and friends," the spokesman said in a statement.
"Another injured worker is receiving treatment in hospital and our thoughts and best wishes are with him. All others on site have been safely accounted for.
Drivers are being told to avoid the area if possible.
More to come.
