Salim Mehajer Declared Bankrupt By Judge

Controversial Sydney businessman Salim Mehajer has been declared bankrupt by a Federal Circuit Court judge.

On Tuesday, Judge Justin Smith rejected his lawyer's argument that the bankruptcy notice was invalid.

The order means the estate of the former Auburn deputy mayor will be managed by a trustee who will take control of his property and financial affairs and deal with his creditors.

The liquidator appointed to handle Mehajer's failed company, SM Project Developments, served a bankruptcy notice on him in September 2017 which resulted in bankruptcy proceedings over a debt of around $200,000.

Mehajer's estate will now be managed by a bankruptcy trustee.

Other creditors, including the Australian Taxation Office, supported the application.

Mehajer was not in court on Tuesday, having been refused bail three times since he was charged with perverting the course of justice and conspiring to cheat or defraud over an allegedly staged car crash.
