Sad News For Those Close To The Late Princess Diana

Many who were close to the late Princess Diana Spencer are in mourning, with Di's former stepmum, Raine Spencer, passing away.

Countess Spencer died on Friday morning after a short illness, aged 87.

The news was confirmed by her son, William Legge, the Earl of Dartmouth.

Raine married Princess Di's father Earl Spencer, in 1976 until his time of death in 1992.

She has been credited as being influential in helping Diana's father, the 8th Earl Spencer, recover from a stroke three years before Lady Di's wedding so that he could not only attend the nuptials but also walk her down the aisle.

While reports suggest that Raine and Di's relationship was tumultuous early on, the two eventually reconciled.

Raine was an especially close confidante and shoulder to cry on when Diana's marriage came to an end.

This closeness led to a job opportunity for Raine in 1995 when Di's then boyfriend (Dodi Fayed) had his father, Egyptian billionaire, Mohamed Al-Fayed, hire her as Director of Harrods International and Harrods Estates.

While brought up in a family that judged females firstly on looks before smarts, Raine often bucked the trend, often involving herself in the political landscape and business ventures.

Raine also gave evidence in 2007 at the London Inquest into Princess Diana's death.

"[Diana] always said I had no hidden agenda," she told the courts.

"So many people, because she was so popular and so world famous, wanted something out of her. It was a very draining life."

Countess Spencer is survived by her three sons, William Legge, 10th Earl of Dartmouth, Henry, Rupert and daughter Charlotte.
