Melbourne Kidnapping Caught On CCTV

A Melbourne woman has desperately thrown herself on to the bonnet of a moving car in an attempt to stop a thief escaping in a luxury car with a baby trapped inside.

The dramatic footage was taken on Tuesday at 3PM when a Mercedes Benz four-wheel-drive was stolen from a mother at a school pick-up in Melbourne’s north.

Police released footage of the car driving down a road just moments after it was stolen, showing a family friend on the bonnet of the 4WD banging on the windscreen.

Police said the driver ignored the woman and continued to drive with her on the bonnet for 400 metres until she fell off.

Amazingly, she was uninjured.

The baby girl’s mother can also be seen running down the road chasing after the car, which still had her child in the backseat.

The mother was waiting to pick up her children from a Coburg school when her car was stolen.

She said she was standing just beside the car with the engine still running when the man barged his way into the driver's seat and took control of the vehicle.

Another male, believed to be working together with the driver, fled the scene in a silver Toyota Camry sedan with a rear spoiler, report police.

Police said the man told a witness there was a baby in the car and he didn't know what to do with it.

The baby girl was reportedly safe and well when she was found, and was quickly reunited with her mother.

She was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for medical assessment.
