Police Dog Mauled During Western Sydney Chase

A police dog has been attacked by two other dogs while tracking an alleged offender at Whalan this morning.

A man wanted for a number of offences allegedly assaulted an officer then ran from the scene shortly after midnight on Friday.

A Police Dog and his handler tracked the man to a backyard in Whalan.

The handler checked the yard for other pets but when the police dog entered the yard and approached the hiding man, the police dog was mauled by two dogs.

He was taken to a vet and has undergone surgery for internal injuries.

He is now recovering and will be monitored for the next few days.

The accused man was taken to Mt Druitt Police Station where he was charged.

The police officer sustained minor injuries to his forearm while trying to stop the dog fight.
