Police Charge Man Over Sydney Rape 40 Years On
Police have charged a man almost 40 years after the rape of a woman in Sydney.
The then-22-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint in a vehicle on Qantas Drive, Mascot, on Saturday 25 April 1981.
A man – then aged 26 – was arrested by detectives and charged over the incident.
He was granted bail then failed to attend court in 1984, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
After new information was provided to police, detectives from Botany Bay Police Area Command worked with Victorian detectives to arrest a 62-year-old man on Thursday.
The man was extradited to NSW on Thursday night.
He has now been charged with the outstanding warrant for the offence of rape.
He was refused bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.
