Labor MP David Feeney Quits Over Citizenship
Federal Labor MP David Feeney has resigned from parliament after failing to find documents renouncing his British citizenship and won't recontest his seat of Batman.
Mr Feeney's eligibility to sit in the lower house is currently being examined by the High Court and Thursday was the due date for him to provide evidence to the court about his citizenship status.
But he told reporters in Melbourne he had been unable to find sufficient evidence of his British renunciation.
"On this basis having regard for my duty under section 44 of the constitution I have today written to the Speaker of the House of Representatives resigning as an MP effective immediately," he said.
