Education Minister Says Schools Should Address #MeToo

As parents prepare to send their children back to school, the NSW education minister has backed discussing the anti-sexual harassment movement #MeToo in classrooms.

NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes has reportedly urged principals to tackle the issue of sexual harassment "open frankly and objectively".

Mr Stokes has told the Daily Telegraph that schools shouldn't be isolated from current events.

"When issues of societal importance arise it is to be expected that, when appropriate, teachers discuss with students what these issues mean," he said.

The movement has dominated headlines for months with celebrities utilising the awards season to speak up.

The Daily Telegraph has also reported that the #MeToo issue, is the "No. 1 thing they’re talking about".

According to Dr Justin Coulson, a parenting expert, he thinks it would be remiss of schools not to incorporate the topic into their curriculum.

He said it was important to address issues of consent and respect and it should be "solutions focused".
