Cyclist Stabbed After Confrontation Over One-Metre Rule

A 52-year-old cyclist has been stabbed after a confrontation over WA’s one-metre rule.

He was riding through Kings Park with his wife on Friday when a car closely passed him.

The man then rode alongside the car, telling the driver he had overtaken him unsafely. The man drove off.

A short time later, he saw the driver in the carpark and rode up to speak to him.

“He came out of the car with a knife,” the cyclist said.

“He hit me on my chest on the left-hand side.

“He hates bicycles. He didn’t like being told off. I stepped back and told my wife to call the police.”

He said the incident shocked him.

“I thought he was going to say sorry, but when I approached him he stormed out of his car,” he said.

“I thought he had his key in his hand ... when I looked down I was bleeding.”

WA motorists must leave a gap of one metre between their vehicle and a cyclist.

Police are investigating the incident.
