Cardinal George Pell Charged Over Historical Sex Offences
Victorian Police have just confirmed that Cardinal George Pell has just been summonsed and will face a string of serious child sex charges.
According to news.com.au a police spokeswoman has just confirmed that they had been investigating Pell for some time with detectives from Taskforce Sano.
“Victoria Police can confirm that it has received advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions relating to a current investigation into historical sexual assault allegations,” she said.
“Detectives from Taskforce Sano will now take time to consider that advice.”
The allegations concern offenses dating back to the Cardinal’s time as a priest in Ballarat and while he was the archbishop of Melbourne.
Cardinal Pell is Australia’s highest ranking Catholic and is currently based in the Vatican, which could cause issues for prosecution as Australia has no extradition treaty with the Vatican.
Despite this, it is expected that he will return to Victoria to fight the charges.
Police are expected to release further details on the charges later today.
