Cameron Smith Refuses Ch9 Interview At Origin Half-Time

Cameron Smith gave Channel Nine the cold shoulder at last night's State of Origin game after a week of controversy following the station's interview with Alex McKinnon.

After being refused a right of reply during the 60 Minutes interview on Sunday night, Smith avoided the cameras during half-time.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Smith's former Maroons teammate and Channel Nine commentator, Darren Lockyer, approached the captain for an interview but was knocked back.

Smith was reportedly upset that he was not given the chance to defend himself after McKinnon criticised his actions during the game that left him paralysed last year.

A Nine spokesperson said Smith wasn't given the chance to give his side of the story because the report "was about Alex McKinnon".

Yesterday Origin coach Mal Meninga threw his support behind Smith, although he refused to add to the debate on a personal level.

"I have a private opinion but I don't want to air that publicly," he said.

"But what everyone has been saying I concur with - Cameron is a decent human being.

"He is a respected member of the rugby league fraternity and deserves some respect.

"But you can't win by making any kind of comment."

Last night marked Smith's 36th Origin appearance.
