Cameron Smith Boycotts Channel Nine Origin Interviews

If you watched 60 Minutes this week, you would have seen a heartwarming story of perseverance, determination and above all, true love.

That is the story of Alex McKinnon and his fiance Teigan Power.

The now 23-year-old's world was rocked a year ago when he suffered a spinal injury after an illegal tackle on the football field.

McKinnon was deemed a quadriplegic after the incident and has been in rehabilitation ever since, determined to walk again.

During the 60 Minutes special with McKinnon on Sunday night, he was shown for the first time the footage from on the field during and after he was taken off on a stretcher.

The footage showed Melbourne Storm Cameron Smith arguing the penalty awarded to Newcastle Knights after the illegal tackle.

McKinnon was shocked to see that Smith was arguing the penalty and that he said to the referee, "He doesn't duck his head, that doesn't happen."

However according to a report on news.com.au, now Smith, who was allegedly never approached by Channel Nine or 60 Minutes for a right of reply, is said to be deeply upset that he was not allowed to defend himself on the program.

A Nine spokesperson said Smith wasn't given the chance to give his side of the story because the report "was about Alex McKinnon".

According to the same report on news.com.au, The Maroons captain is reportedly so angry that he will refuse all interview requests from Nine before, during or after Wednesday night's State of Origin decider.

A Nine spokesperson said: "60 Minutes has offered Cameron Smith a chance to respond this Sunday."

According to the report, Fairfax Media understands Smith will turn 60 Minutes down but may accept an approach from another network, most likely the Seven Network.

Smith is said to be especially upset, as he helped NSW Blues Captain Paul Gallen kick off the RiseForAlex Fund, in a bid to provide relief to the injured star.
