12-year-old boy rescued after being buried alive
A 12-year-old boy have been found alive and uninjured after he was buried under an avalanche for 40 minutes in the French Alps.
The boy was skiing off piste in a group of seven on Wednesday, at the La Plange ski resort in Bourg Saint-Maurice, France.
Police say he started going down ahead of the others and was the only one caught, when a large section of snow detached and came down the mountain.
He was dragged at least 100 meters by the force of the avalanche.
A helicopter was flown to the scene by rescue workers and sniffer dogs detected the boy, whose jacket was not equipped with an avalanche detector.
The operation has been described as ‘miraculous’ by rescue works as his chances of survival are said to be just 15 minutes under the snow.
‘We can call it a miracle,’ Captain Patrice Ribes said.
‘A day after Christmas, there was another gift in store.’
The boy was still sent to hospital for a checkup, reportedly with a broken leg.
